Weis on Thursday flatly denied allegations from Clemson University freshman Jamie Cumbie that Notre Dame coaches had commented negatively on Clemson in an attempt to talk Cumbie out of his verbal commitment to the school last summer.

"I find it quite amusing that a student-athlete already enrolled at another university has decided to be the team spokesman on Notre Dame recruiting practices," Weis said in a prepared statement issued through the university's office of sports information. "There is an obvious contradiction between how this was handled and what was stated. We do not use negative recruiting tactics. All we do is represent what Notre Dame stands for."

Cumbie told the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier earlier this week that Notre Dame coaches continued to pursue him after he had verbally committed to Clemson. Though he graduated from Morris (Ill.) High School near Chicago, Cumbie grew up in South Carolina and grew up a Clemson fan.

"They said Clemson has a horrible education," Cumbie reportedly told Post and Courier reporter Larry Williams.
Weis denied that.

"If supporting Notre Dame academics can be misconstrued as speaking down on another school's academics, call us guilty," Weis said in the statement. "Coach Dan Darlington, the former head coach at Morris High School, and coach George Dergo, who succeeded him, were on top of everything we were doing. This is an obvious case of negative reporting against Notre Dame by other institutions. Maybe they should look in the mirror."

Do you think Charlie is a little pissed about this one?

ahhh Fock Charlie; take it like a man.

I don't know what did and did not happen, but I think his statement was pretty immature. Be the bigger man.

FWIW, I blame the reporter. I believe the reporter was fishing for a quote and when he got something close he went with it. Gamecocks are fishing for anything negative about ND because of the Gray situation. This way they get to do it using Clemson so the heat doesn't come back on them.

I blame the reporter. I also think that Weis' reaction was not a reaction to Cumbie but rather a statement to quell internet rumors, etc., and score points with other recruits. Weis and his staff have been very quick on dispelling internet rumors...he must have a graduate assistant monitoring the web, which is a very smart move these days.

I don't think the shot Weis took was at Cumbie/Clemson...I think it was a shot at the reporter and U of South Carolina. I think the "institution" he was talking about was South Carolina -- apparently, CW and Spurrier really dislike each other. I saw that yesterday, after the Weis statement, Cumbie retracted his statement about the ND coaches saying that a Clemson education was "horrible". My sense is that maybe Weis spoke with Bowden or Cumbie's HS coach, and the message got to Cumbie that Weis had to make the statement to stop the bullshit by USC.

Cumbie's retraction --

"I did not characterize our conversations properly," Cumbie said. "No one from Notre Dame, either in writing or in general conversation, said Clemson had a horrible education. Notre Dame made a comparison in different areas between the two schools, and the facts made Notre Dame look better. One of the areas was education. I am sure everyone makes comparisons during the recruiting process. It didn't bother me at all."
