Travis Thomas, a #1 RB on most college teams and #2 on ND's depth chart has been moved to outside linebacker to add speed to ND's defense. Charlie was quoted as saying that he needs his best players on the field, and he feels Thomas will succeed as a speed linebacker.

So you've depleated your RB depth and put somebody with very little, if any, D1 experience at linebacker on defense and that's a good thing?

Yes. I am a big fan of coaches who get their best athletes on the field. I think that Weis would not "take a chance" on an inexperienced guy if he didn't have full faith in Thomas' ability to handle the position. From what I understand, the LB position that he would fill is not one of the signal callers on D...it's an instinct/skill/speed position. As such, there's less of a need for experience and more of a need for athleticism.
RB depth is not a problem. Apparently, the two freshman are both progressing well. Word on the street is that Weis has been so impressed with the speed and agility of Munir Prince that he may be used immediately in a Reggie Bush type role. Also, in a worst-case scenario, TThomas knows enough of the offense to return to that side of the ball if dire circumstances warrant.

Thomas played last year, and was good. He was the team's second-leading rusher with 250 yards, 3.9 yards per carry + 5 TDs. Most of these stats were accumulated after Rashon Powers-Neal was suspended from the team. TT was a great change-of-pace from Walker, as USC found out.

Also, I feel good about recruiting when they get a kid who looks like this as a freshman.
