View Full Version : My new musical obsession....
Mind you, I'm grossly behind the current music scene, and it's a rare occasion (like Mayhem getting laid by a live female rare) that I actually go out and buy a CD.
That said, my wife got me "Get Behind Me Satan" by the White Stripes for Christmas, and I immediately fell in love with it. Then I used part of a gift certificate to go and buy "Elephant", which is just as good, if not better.
They have several other albums, all earlier. Has anyone heard any of their earlier stuff? Should I go out and scoop them all up?
I'll hang up and listen.
Let's have a ball and a biscuit, baby. And take our sweet little time about it.

I don't listen to much of the White Stripes, but James Blunt is the new focus of my musical obsession. Shakira moves into the #2 hole.

You're beautiful! Man, that song is annoying. :screams:
Also, TK. I have White Blood Cells, which was released before Elephant. I don't think it's as good as the most recent two but it's still probably worth getting if you like them. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "I Think I Smell a Rat" are pretty great and the others aren't bad at all.
Also, if you can get your hands on any of their live stuff (I know there's a DVD) then you must do that ASAP.

I distinctly remember you fawning all over that song in the Sanctuary. When I first heard it, I was all like "meh".
I like it better now, but not as much as "The Air Above My Fingers", "Hypnotize", or "The Hardest Button to Button" (uh-oh! :headbang:).

"Goodbye My Lover" was the song that got me interested in him. Keep in mind that I also think I may be currently dealing with depression issues as I try to kick a couple habits.

I downloaded a whole concert (live at the Glastonbury Festival 06.24.05) from here (http://www.whitestripes.net/downloads.php)
Both of those songs are on it, so maybe I'm not missing out on much.

I'm TK? :|
Songs on "Get Behind Me Satan" that are better than Ball and Biscuit:
Blue Orchid
The Denial Twist
Take, Take, Take
As Ugly As I Seem
Red Rain
So I guess you could say Ball and Biscuit is my 8th favorite White Stripes sonf! :hyper:

Jack White used to be in one of my favorite bands when he was about 15.
The Detroit-based band (now defunct) was called Goober & The Peas. (The lead singer, Dan Miller, played Luther Perkins in the recent Johnny Cash pic, Walk The Line.)
They were an amazing live band, we used to check them out when I was attending MSU all the time.
Kind of a combo stand up comedy/psycho-cowpunk type thing.
Here's a pic of Jack when he was in the band: http://gooberandthepeas.net/doc.jpg
If you're interested in seeing a video of theirs (it's pretty funny) and hearing some sample songs, go to http://gooberandthepeas.net
Miller, is now fronting a band called Blanche, who does a lot of shows as the opening act for The White Stripes. They're kind of a strange bluegrass outfit. They have a great tune called "Garbage Picker", just hilarious, and a good jam too. www.blanchemusic.com They also covered/re-did The White Stripe's "Who's To Say".
TK, I think you'd really dig their humor.

You can't take paulie seriously on music. He's the one who badmouthed a blues CD I made, by commenting that I should "put some...Albert King...on it"
It had 2 Albert King songs on it.

Holy crap.
I saw the thread title, and thought two things:
1) Man, I've been meaning to post how knocked out I am about that new White Stripes album!
2) Wouldn't it be funny if that was the new obsession TK was talking about?
Also also, I'm listening to it now.
I'd add "My Doorbell" and "Little Ghost" to the "better than" list.
"Don't make it with a singer
cause he'll tell everyone in the world
what he's thinking about the girl..."
Genius!

I don't own any White Stripes music and I only get to hear what Sirius will let me here, but "Hardest Button to Button" is pretty http://www.foothillsdesign.com/geeks/Smileys/smilies/rock.gif (and the video is cool too) and I like "Walkin' With a Ghost".
You guys should all stop like the White Stripes, else you risk having something in common with kraziness.

And you claimed it 'The Best Blues Compilation Ever!" and included how many B.B. King songs. What I said about Albert King was that some of the songs you had on it, his original versions were better. Forget all about how I turned you on to several of the best guitar blues you ever heard.
Jeebus man, is this a "what have you done for me lately" world or what?

ShitRock is a genre, not a comment on quality. The White Stripes are better than most of the bands that fall into that genre, by far. See, we agree.

What I said was "There's no way any collection with that many B.B. King songs could be considered the best ever". Subsequent conversation led me to make the comment about Albert King's versions being superior. That is the way I recall it, you don't. Are you really claiming I have no knowledge of Blues music?
You have decent taste in music, more like mine than many other Geeks. We should embrace our common ground not fall int the pit of criticism, especially after I turned you on the Roy Buchanan, one of the greatest Blues players ever.
