Used TurboTax last year but it looks like their rates went up. Its $40 for the federal and $30 for each state (I have two). Heck, for about $50 I could have someone do them for me.

Taxcut federal I found online for $13.95. With one state it's $19.95.

I've used it since 1999. Go with that. You can import last year's TurboTax with it, too.
And don't forget to deduct the cost!

Federal + 1 state is $19.95? So all I would have to do is buy a second additional state?

Yep. I think they also have an online version where you can save your progress and come back to it later, and that's even cheaper.

Software is for pussies. I use a legal pad, a pencil and a calculator.

Been doing my own taxes for 10 years.

Good idea. I should look at Costco and see if they have something like that.

That's right, the deal they sent me said for returning customers. Did you use them last year?

Also I forgot about the processing fee. :balls:

Why do you need software? Isn't it pretyy easy just to take a 1040 and start filling in numbers?

How long does it take?

CMT

I guessin reality, (i) I'm not sure I'd trust the software, so I would have to check it for accuracy which would probably take as much time as just doing it myself in the first place, and (ii) I'm old-school, yo. :mime:

I'd just want to make sure all the numbers got put in the right place and properly tabulated.

As I do it on the 1040 in pencil, it's clear that such is happening.

Was it Bonky? I already said yes to Burt, so SDJ and McBone are the other two?
How about you answer my email of inquiry then, assdugout? We could avoid public confusion that way...

OB1, stand by.

About 20 minutes, give or take. I do 2 of them just to check - married filing jointly and married filing separately.

That's definitely quicker than me. Do you itemize?

We definitely add them up and compare against the standard deduction. But my wife does that, since the bulk of our itemized, um, items are medical expenses.

Also, turbotax keeps all your info from year to year, so you don't have to look it up. Which is nice.

According to our tax returns, we're too poor to afford a briefcase. Maybe one of those freezer-size ziploc bags or something.
