So what do people think about this Tocchet/Gretsky's wife situation?
I think it's interesting that she came right out and stated that she did not place bets for Wayne. Is she really that much of a gambling junky or is she covering up for him? Why would she just offer up this information? Isn't it better to make blanket statements until you're actually asked specific questions?
Something seems fishy to me.

There's no doubt in my mind that he's dirty as shit. At the same time, I also think this wouldn't be such a big story if it didn't go down during the slowest sports month of the year.

I'd agree that she's probably the middle woman to keep Wayne's nose clean. Apparently there were no bets on hockey? If that's true then who cares?

1. I think she's a junky. From what I gather, this is not just some Superbowl square thing, it reaches deep, and has been linked to organized crime.
2. I can't believe Gretzky used it to bet on games of any sort. But that's just how I feel when considering his demeanor, which doesn't amount to squat.
Also, every time the man speaks, I just want to curl up in the fetal position and doze off. Possibly the most boring, non-charasmatic human being ever to walk the planet.

Much like Darren said regarding it being interesting that she came right out and said she didn't place bets for Wayne, I found it interesting that they made sure to come right out and say there was no betting on hockey.
Also, its kick ass that the Unabomber prosecutor was brought in.

I watched his 30 second press conference last night after the Stars/Coyotes game. He is either A) Guilty as hell. B) Like you said TK, a horrible speaker or C) All of the above.
He looked so uncomfortable last night. And he didn't even seem to be displaying the appropriate emotions. These are serious allegations and his reaction was just awkward.

I've heard them say she placed over $100,000 in bets, including $5000 on the coin toss at the Super Bowl (winner).

Yup, she's junkified.
I really have the feeling that Gretzky is more of a concerned husband than anything else, and the fact that he let Tocchet cater to his wife's sickness kinda makes him a pussy, too.

I guess what I'm missing here is, if you really need to bet, don't you need to try really hard to do it illegally? I mean, can't anyone just call up a sports book in Vegas and bet without being a gambling ring?

I'm guessing if they're betting that much money, they would do it illegally for two reasons 1) no income taxes 2) keep it out of the news that Wayne Gretzky and his wife bet $100,000 over the last 6 months.

That's like pocket change to them though isnt it? Didnt Michael Jordan have the same problem?

He did. I still am of the belief that Jordan's first "retirement" was actually a year long ban for gambling on sports.
I meant more that it doesn't look to greta that Wayne Gretzky and his cyborg-looking wife have gambling problems when he's the coach of an NHL team.

:highfive:
I absolutely believe this too. My friends think I'm crazy.
Jordan Spice: I saw Jordan playing black jack at the Flamingo in New Orleans in 1996. I drunkenly stuck my hand between a couple posse members and got a look away shake as he left.
The whole posse sat down at my buddies table after he told them he wouldn't leave (not realizing what was up). When he got up to take a piss they threw up the velvet ropes.

I especially like the fact that when asked about whether he knew about his wife gambling, he said something like, "I don't know. Talk to her."
Then they find wiretaps of him talking to Tocchet about getting his wife's name out of the mix.
"Um. Gee. I don't know nothing."

Yeah but the wiretaps are like from the day or the day after the gambling ring stories broke in the media, which actually go to support what Gretzky said about not knowing of his wife's gambling.
So the real question is, what exactly is the purpose behind this vendetta you seem to have against Wayne Gretzky, DarrenW?
DarrenW
02-13-2006, 06:56 PM
I don't have a vendetta against Wayne. His dingo didn't eat my baby or anything like that. Unfortunately in this day and age, when a high profile athlete is accused of some wrongdoing, it seems that more often than not, they are found to be guilty. It's unfortunate, but with athletes it seems that from the media/public's perspective that you are guilty until proven innocent.
I also have a hard time understanding how A) Wayne would have no prior knowledge of his wife's involvement in an illegal gambling ring with his assistant coach and B) If he did indeed have knowledge then why he would allow it to continue to the tune of $500,000? It's not like she snuck out and bought an expensive purse without telling him. She bet half a million dollars!! Something is missing with this picture.
*I'm not sure what you mean by mystery, TK. I'm Darren. I like fantasy football and sports in general. I was hoping to come over here and shoot the breeze. Is that a problem?

Also, Darren, pay no attention to AW. We're of the opinion that he was dropped as a baby.

I wish Wilzone and TK would refrain from making comments like this outside of the Wilzone/TK Gay S&M Board.
To Darren's point about what Gretzky knew when, and without taking the time to read a single news story on this topic, I'd bet that Gretzky knew his wife was betting but didn't view it as a big deal because (i) he didn't know how much money she was betting, (ii) even if he did, $500,000 is like pocket change to them, (iii) he didn't think the betting was illegal, (iv) even if he did, he viewed it as a victimless crime and decided to trust his wife and, if he knew his assistant coach was involved, to trust his assistant coach as something they were doing as friends, and (v) if he put any limits on her, he would have told her to make for god-damn sure she wasn't betting on hockey, which she didn't.

It appears that Wayne's wiretaps were after the fact, so it looks like his claim that he knew nothing may hold water. I still have a hard time understanding how his wife does all of this without his knowledge. He must never deal with the finances if he doesn't notice 500K is missing.
