View Full Version : Corking Fee

So, the wife and I went out to dinner with another couple last night. We ordered two bottles of wine with dinner and when the bill came, the restaurant charged me a $15 corking fee per bottle.
I've paid such a fee when bringing my own bottle of wine to dinner but never for a bottle of wine ordered in-house. I was quite pissed, however, I also didn't want to act like a cheap asshole when the check came. I took the waiter aside and asked him to remove it from the check, he refused... :screams:
Have any of you guys ever run into this?

:lool:
No. No one's ever charged me to re-cap a bottle of beer. hth.

I'm guessing the nicest restaurant you've ever eaten in is a Ruby Tuesday's.

Never heard of anything like that...only at BYOB places. Good thing you weren't at dinner with t.j

I wanted to argue about it but, it was Valentine's Day and I didn't want to seem like a cheap bastard. Which is exactly what the restaurant was hoping for...oh well. :sadbanana:

I've seen it before when the wine list didn't have the usual mark-up. Typically you don't see it as you're paying 2x or 3x retail for your wine - was the wine marked-up? If so, you got screwed. NYC words?

NYC words?
This is what I was thinking. Now that you're an uppity NYer, you have to deal with this kind of bullshit. And watching Eddy Curry's stat line of 11 points, 2 rebounds, 6 fouls.

In the store, the bottle would have gone for $35-40, we paid $55. That was the level of markup across the menu.

That may be why...they decrease their mark-up and hit every bottle with a $15 surcharge. That sounds preferable to me.

Your sensible explanation is really killing my sense of righteous indignation. :sadbanana:

Either way, I think its bad business. I have no problem paying $70 for a $40 bottle of wine at a nice restaurant, but if I think I'm paying $55 and then they hit me with a bullshit $15 corking fee, I'd be pissed.

Go back tonight and bring your own corkscrew. Charge them $15 to uncork your bottles of wine. :D

Why is it a corking fee if they are removing the cork? Shouldn't it be an uncorking fee?

Next time, smach the neck of the bottle off with the little crab hammer. Save the $15

Seriously. Are they actually charging you $15 to uncork a bottle of wine? That's insane and if it didn't say it on the menu somewhere i'd be pissed and would complain. :wigglypea:
Now, if they were charging you $15 to recork the bottle of wine, then i'd say shame on you for not finishing it! :twak:

only once...for some champagne at New Years that we had brought. I've never heard of being charged for a bottle the restaurant sells.

I thank you for making it a special place, regardless of my involvement. But, it was time for me to move forward and find a new refuge. :mime:

No, I've never been to a place that charges a 'Corking Fee'. Pretty dumb - just mark up the wine so you don't have people complaining.
