View Full Version : **Top 5 list 02/17/06**
Top 5 concerts attended:
5. Tears for Fears, Club Eastbrook, early 90's. My ex-girlfriend made me go with her to this show and I actually had a really good time, despite not wanting to.
4. Metallica, The Palace, 1995-ish. Their Black Album tour. If I had been sitting closer, this would be higher on my list.
3. Live, Van Andel Arena, '99 (I think). Opening up - Luscious Jackson. Both bands put on a great show, lots of energy.
2. Nine Inch Nails, Pine Knob, '94. Opening up was an unknown Marylin Manson and equally unknown Hole, with Countney Love at lead singer. Unbelievable performance by NIN. MM was awesome too, despite being the first opening band and having to come out when it was still light out (outdoor venue). Memorable line, from Manson: "There's so many people to spit on but they're all out there." Pine Knob is an ampitheter, so the general admission section is located outside of the seats. There was hardly anyone in the seats at that early hour, but the GA was almost full.
1. Metallica, Kellogg Center Arena, '87. ...And Justice For All tour. Opening up: Queesnryche. This was the first and best concert I ever attended. I was in general admission with my buddies. I remember actually being lifted off the ground on several occasions. Also, all the stoners and burnouts in general admission made an agreement to boo Queensryche off the stage before the concert began, but then they came out and completely rocked the hizzy. When Metallica came out, utter insanity ensued. This was back before anyone knew what they looked like (the video for One came out some months later), and actually watching people play the music I loved was almost too much. I don't think I'll ever hit that adrenaline high again.

5. moe. -- Ga Theater in Athens, GA (UGA) ~2000. They played for about 5 hours and only actually did 6 songs I believe. My favorite "Jam band," moreso than Phish, Widespread Panic, etc...
4 Stone Temple Pilots -- The Omni in ATL ~1997. Right before Scott Weiland wigged out and right after Tiny Music... was realeased. It was 2.5 great hours with an acoustic set thrown in the middle. Local H, another favorite band of mine, was the opener.
3. Cracker -- the streets of Athens ~2003. Free concert for "Ath-fest" right on the street. Lots of free beer tasting to be had and a larger than normal crowd for Cracker. High energy from start to finish.
2. Radiohead -- the lawn at Stone Mountain ~2002. Right after Amnesiac came out. It was great from start to finish.
1. Miller's Tale -- I saw Miller's Tale probably 10x in High School. They were a bunch of GT guys that started a band and they were easily the most rocking shows I've ever seen. I'll rip some of my CDs and thrown a song or two up here sometime.

I saw this tour. Live was great but Luscious Jackson was terrible.

I've been to more comedy acts than musical concerts, but here are my top 5 (6) from what I remember:
5. (Tie) KMFDM (Avalon, Boston) or Gravity Kills (some club, Boston) ~1997 - I was big fans of both back in college and saw both at the height of my interest. I was in a very altered state for both shows but remember both being very intense and fun.
4. Bruce Dickinson ~2000 at the Strand in Providence - I wasn't as big a fan as the friends that I went with, but it was a very high-energy show with a lot of catchy music. I have been buying his albums ever since because I was so impressed with that show.
3. Primus ~2002 in Boston (Orpheum?) - The place was way too small and needed air conditioning for the amount of people packed in there, but it was a very good show. They did their hits and had the movie screens behind them to fit the wacky images with the music. At the end, they were just going off and doing their own thing, but it was fun to listen to.
2. Tom Petty ~ 2001 at Great Woods - Just a great, trippy show. We had great seats and had prepared well right before the show.
1. NIN/David Bowie - 1995 at Great Woods - lead act was Life of Agony and they were pretty great too. This was my first concert and probably best experience. We started out on the Lawn section (where you can barely see the stage) and we were just partying and listening to the stage. I made out with some random chick who then jumped on my shoulders so she could see better. Some stagehand came by and gave all of us passes to the pit right in front of the stage for the main acts. It was unbelievable.
Honorable mention: Even though I don't like them now, I saw Kid Rock & Staind when both were fairly new (not yet overly commercialized and Staind wasn't faggy) and it was a pretty great show. Surprising since it was at the armpit called Lupo's in Providence.

I would've loved to've seen this show. I didn't get into Bowie much before that tour, and now I'm a big fan of his.
If the White Stripes ever get around to my podunk area of the world, I'm definitely going to see them.
5. U2, Yankee Stadium, 1993 - When they played Sunday Bloody Sunday they nearly took the place down.
4. Pink Floyd, Giants Stadium, 1994 - I'll admit I was completely wasted, but they still rocked, even without Waters.
3. Beastie Boys and Tribe Called Quest, Continetal Airlines Arena, 199? - I was really hoping that Q-Tip would come out and they would do Get it Together, but even though they didn't, both bands kicked ass. It was definitely a high energy show, and one of the best i've seen.
2. Pearl Jam - PNC Arts Center, 2004 - I was a huge fan of the first 2 albums and then I stopped listening to them. When the cahnce came up to see them though I took it and I'm glad I did. Vedder was excellent, an d they played so long that the Arts Center literally turned the lights on to try and kick people out because they have some law about how late they can play. He kept on playing through 3 encores and even covered some Springsteen songs because Bruce was playing the next night at the Meadowlands.
1. Incubus, PNC Bank Arts Center, 2004 - My wife loves them, and thus dragged me along, once I heard them live though I became a fan. The guitarist, Mike Einziger, was brilliant, and they really impressed me with their versatility. They are not a one note or one genre band. Sometimes they rock out, sometimes they have a guys spinnning a turntable, and then in Aqueous Transmission they have Einziger playing a Chisese instrument I can't pronounce or spell.
Honorable mentions to Neil Young, Santana, Billy Joel, Guns 'n Roses, Janes Addiction, G-Love and Special Sauce/Run DMC and that same NIN/MM tour that TK saw.

Tough to narrow it down. For "concerts", I'll go as follows:
5. Wynton and Ellis Marsalis, circa 1998, Radio City. Smoothe.
4. Live Aid. A spectacle which will never be matched.
3. Fishbone at Temple University, '90s. Unbelievable energy.
2. Bruce Sprinsteen at Princeton's Jadwyn Gym, 1978. Before Bruce went bigtime.
1. Jambalaya Jam, Riverfront, Philadelphia, circa 1995 (Dr. John, Radiators, Neville Brothers, Geno Delafose, Queen Ida, and many others). More talent in one place than can be imagined.
For acts in smaller venues, I'll go this way:
5. Marcia Ball, NYC Booze Cruise, 2002. Ball is simply fun.
4. Crowded House, Trocadero, Philadelphia, early '90s. It snowed, so only about 400 people showed. The Finns invited most of the audience up onto the stage at various times to sing and play instruments. My friends and I sang backup on "Don't Dream It' Over".
3. Jimmy Buffett, accoustic at a restaurant in Sanibel, FL, circa 1983. We went for dinner. Buffett played an unannounced set of about 20 songs.
2. Mavericks, BB King's Blues Club, NYC, 2004. Raul Malo is a fantastic singer, and the band rocks.
1. Ramones, CBGBs, NYC circa 1990. My date got kicked in the head, and we still managed to have fun.

Besides all the Ween shows, I'd rank them
5) KRS-1 and a bunch of local guys at Metropol in Pittsburgh
4) Built to Spill at Nita's Hideaway in Tempe (although I lost my wallet there)
3) Rage Against the Machine and Wu-Tang Clan at Starlake Ampitheater
2) Anti-Flag and Dropkick Murphys at Club Laga.
1) Boss Hog at the Oakland Beehive in Pittsburgh

I was never a huge Bowie fan either, but he put on a good show and somehow blended well with NIN.

5 - Tesla/Firehouse in Pensacola FL. Scored frre tickets from the chick I started dating. Firehouse sucked balls but Tesla was pretty good.
4 - Aerosmith/Brother Cane in Bilouxi Mississippi. Aerosmith had just started to get kinda sappy at this time (after Get a Grip album) but they were great live. Brother Cane only played 5 or 6 songs but also rocked.
3 - Metallica in Pensacola FL. 1992 I believe, after the black album came out. Excellent show, the best I had been to until a couple years ago.
2 - Motley Crue in Birmingham AL just a few months ago. Even though it was in an outside venue it was still the loudest concert I have been to. Scantily clad bitches dancing on poles and swinging around the whole time. The music was great and Vince Neil hasn't lost any vocal abilities.
1 - KISS/Poison in Birmingham AL. Absolutely the best show I have ever seen. KISS is one of my favorite bands and to hear the music live while also witnessing the fire-breathing, blood-spitting, pyrotechnics, ect was fantabulous. I always considered Poison as one of the borderline-cheesy bands, but they did a great job for an opening act.

Tesla was greta.
The best part about Forehouse was the opening. The loud-ass drums and the background chants. "Rock on............turn it up!......"
