A useful read. And yet another reason it's :sadbanana: being a Raider fan.

Last year Rich Gannon came to the rescue by reworking his contract to get the team under the cap -- and then retiring. Who will help out this year?
Good question. Any idea what the answer might be?

It doesn't even count Woodson's money, since he's free unless he gets franchised again. Sapp & Washington are $7.25M in combined salary. Moss is $8.25M (without any associated bonus proration due to the trade). Gibson is due $10M in salary and will have to either get cut or renegociate. Besides Gibson & Moss, Collins is the only other one over $5M (at $6M). Gibson & the two old DT's might not even get us halfway there (depending on the bonus accelerations for each). Cut the two old DT's and the bad D gets even worse.

I did think the first part, but failed to consider the second part.

But at least the rumors are that they are going to cut Pennington, which won't help them for 2006 but will help them tremendously in the long run.

Yeah, just like last year when we signed those bums Moss and Jordan even though we had no room. Raiders will be fine.

Sure. All teams accomplish it one way or another.
Any ideas where the savings will come from? I figured some big cuts will be on the defensive side, but then galt reminded me that a weak defense will weaken further.

I really like Chad, and I hope he does come back and succeed in the NFL, but there really doesn't appear to be much of an alternative to cutting him for the Jets if he refuses to seriously restructure his contract.
Now I see they just franchised Abraham again, I wonder if it's just to make sure they get compensation one way or another or if they are expecting to keep him?

The rumors I have heard are that it was strictly a move to make him more tradeable.
With Abraham and Ty Law likely gone, I think the Jets defense will take a serious hit in 2006. Vilma can only do so much.

Expect the following to either be cut or have their contracts restructured:
Kerry Collins
Derrick Gibson
Ron Stone
Denard Walker
Ron Curry
Zack Crockett
Brad Badger
Bobby Hamilton

I'm certainly not going to disagree that the Def will take a big hit, but let's not say that it would only be Vilma. Ellis, Robertson, Thomas, Hobson, Robertson, Coleman, and hopefully Barton will all be back and that's a decent corp. They would obviously need to patch holes, but the offense would still concern me more.
Depending on how Martin reconstructed his contract, that may help a lot. it's going to be an interesting few months.

The Raiders cut ties with Derrick Gibson and his $10m per season salary. Salary cap impact unknown without understanding the bonus acceleration.
Also, the Lions get a $11.75m salary cap bonus by Shaun Rogers not achieving a bonus clause. So Detroit now has over $20m for Millen to waste in free agency or at the fraft.

Raiders release three: The Raiders, who entered Thursday as the team most over the salary cap, released three players to save $8.8 million of cap room.
The Raiders released defensive tackle Ted Washington, guard Ron Stone and cornerback Denard Walker in the first wave of releases. The Raiders were $23.6 million over the cap. Now they still have to shave $14.8 million of cap room before Sunday night at midnight, the new extended deadline to comply.
So they started out about $30m over and have cut that in half by not franchising anyone and by cutting Gibson plus these guys. Now it'll start to get difficult. Making the Randy money guaranteed would help get them under $10m over the cap, but then make the problems next year worse. Warren Sapp ($4.5m in '06 salary, but not that much cap savings) and Zach Crockett ($2m, same caveat) could be next. Then the only ones left with over $2m in '06 salary are Kerry Collins ($6m) and Barry Sims ($4.45m).

Raiders: Collins expected to go
The News
Quarterback Kerry Collins is expected to be among the Raiders cuts as they continue to reduce salary to be in cap compliance by Sunday's deadline. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Collins's status is unaffected by a potential cap increase that might be come out of continued negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. Releasing Collins will save Oakland over $9 million against the cap.
Our View
If the Raiders release Collins, they will undoubtedly be looking for a veteran in free agency to help the team while it grooms a rookie passer. However, their cap situation may prevent them from signing a quarterback of Drew Brees' caliber. Stay tuned, as two critical fantasy pieces—wide receiver Randy Moss and running back LaMont Jordan—will be significantly affected.
NFLPA lists his '06 salary at $6m, so I don't see how they'd get $9m in cap help. Or maybe there's a roster bonus that NFLPA doesn't have included.

ESPN had the following table on their site:
Oakland Raiders
Player ______________ Cap number 2006 savings
LB Danny Clark ______ $2,712,000 $1,389,000
QB Kerry Collins ____ $12,897,666 $9,196,997
RB Zack Crockett _____ $2,293,571 $2,079,284
DE Bobby Hamilton ___ $5,320,000 $4,040,000
DT Warren Sapp _____ $6,097,000 $109,000
S Derrick Gibson ____ $10,201,000 $9,397,000
OL Ron Stone _______ $3,080,000 $2,760,000
CB Denard Walker ___ $4,590,000 $4,290,000
DT Ted Washington __ $4,747,000 $1,759,000
So I guess they can cut Collins & Hamilton & Crockett and have the $14.8m excess fully taken care of (but with not enough left to sign their picks or sign a vet QB). Then they perhaps guarantee the Randy money to make room for their picks with something left over for a QB.
NewYorkJets.com reports the New York Jets have officially released OC Kevin Mawae.
That caught me off guard a little bit. He is getting up there in age, but when healthy he is still a pro bowl type center. I'm very curious as to how the O-line shapes up now.

The Dolphins cut Junior Seau yesterday.
http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/MIA/9288769
Add that with the release of Reggie Howard, Sam Madison, safety Tebucky Jones and tackle Damion McIntosh and they should save a bit of cap money.

Update. The cap is $7.5M higher than this article expected. The Raiders were supposed to be $18.3M over, according to the article (assuming Derrick Gibson would be cut). The Raiders have since cut Collins, saving $9.2M against the cap. So they should amazingly only be about $1.6M over the cap now.
That said, I don't think it's a good thing for the Raiders that a CBA was reached now. They aren't going to win in 2006, that was a given. Not unless Andrew Walter is the Messiah. I was hoping that free agency would start with no CBA, the cap would be at $94M this year, the Raiders would be forced to blow things up and rebuild even though they don't believe in rebuilding, and then the league would reach a CBA after the cap was already set at the low figure for '06. That seemed like a realistic scenario a few days ago. :dunno:
Granted, this is much better than never getting a CBA and having no salary cap from 2007 on. No fucking way could the Raiders compete in that market, they can barely pay the bills as it is.
