my rankings based on week 1 performances

Girls:
The girls were easy to rank this week. There is a clear separation after the top 4. These girls are also collectively much hotter than in years past. Based on what I've seen, look for Ayla and Kinnick to make the finals.

after week 1, Paris and Kevin were my top 2.
- Paris sang some Billie Holiday on week one. She's just a better singer than the rest of them.
(I don't know all the contestants... I just remember the nice, sweet, black girl that sang Billie Holliday and I think that was Paris?)

- Kevin sang the Josh Grobin song. Yeah, yeah... F' Josh Grobin, uber-fagwords and whatnot but that kid Kevin can sing.

I guess there's more than just singing to being the winner here. Both Kevin and Paris are a bit lacking in the glitz and glamour department... so maybe they won't win. But, IMO, they are the best singers and the fact that they seem like nice people makes me like them even more.

sang some Billie Holliday AFTER her initial song/audition. The judges really liked her and asked what else she sings... she started singing some Billie Holliday and she pretty much kicked ass.


Sure, some of the other contestants probably have a better "look" but like I said. I think these 2 are the best singing talents.

My only hesitation in agreeing to this is that black girl singers (even ridiculously talented and likable ones) don't do very well on the show. Fantasia was a fluke because the talent that season was otherwise incredibly weak.

I think there's a great deal of singing talent this year, but nobody has the full package including likeable personality and good looks.

Ace has the looks, but his charm will wear out. Chris Doughty has a good voice for rock songs, but I think you'll see his voice is limiting in other genres. Also, he's a bit too old for this competition. The pretty brunette with the big ass is eminently likeable, and is great at balads and soulful, slow songs, but I think she'll lose points when we get to some faster stuff. Elliot is just flat ugly, which will lose points for him. Mandisa, who may have the best voice, has a front porch, back porch and a few other porches in different locations -- as much as that shouldn't be a factor, it will be. Paris is the only one who has the likeable factor, a voice that will translate to all genres, and is attractive enough to get her through.

Mandisa absolutely does not have the best voice. She isnt even in the top half. Dont mistake a powerful performace with hitting the proper notes. She had several "misses" the other night. Lisa had none, Paris certainly didnt have any, Kellie had a couple.

But I agree that the talent this season is very good as a whole, but seemingly lacks "the star."

As for last night's cuts, Stevie and Bobby were clearly the 2 worst. I'm a little suprised that Becky got voted off just because I thought there were a few performances not were worse. Patrick leaving is utterly shocking. The boy can sing. Him leading off and being a bit of a bore doomed him. I bet if he went last and gave the exact same performance, he'd still be on the show.

absolutely not. But the point of the show is to find the star. If there isnt one we have to pick the closest thing we can find. The ironic thing is that if there is a star in the group we dont know it yet. most of these people dont have experience singing in front of people, recording, interacting with "fans," etc. we will find out in the coming weeks if any of them have it.

I still dont understand how Fantasia won. friggin Diana DeGarmo was way better than her int he ach of the final 4 weeks of that season. All Fantasia does is scream. the only place I have heard her is on XM who is undoubtedly getting paid to spin her record. Washington DC has 2 of the best "urban" radio stations in the country and I havent heard her on either of them yet.

Being a bore is why it wasn't utterly shocking. He was better than Kevin, but not by much.

Mandisa is one of the top two or three voices in the competition. Too many of these kids lack power in the lower ranges (lisa is a major exception). Not her.
What I heard of Paris doing Gladys was fine, but in the previous week she really struggled at times.

Kelly and Carrie (and to a lesser extent Bo) are. All three had their albums in the top 50 a couple weeks ago. The Grammies made it clear that American Idol does what it claims--makes stars of people. I think all that really proves is that the business is driven by marketing and image rather than talent or skill--but who didn't know that already?

Carrie has the #1 country album in the US, and is 29th overall, peaking at #2.

Bice debuted at #4 in December. I did say "to a lesser extent."
