View Full Version : The Detroit Tigers baseball squadron

In case you don't live in Michigan and are only plugged into the national sports scene via ESPN, the Tigers are having a pretty good season so far. You would never know this, of course, because they have the audacity to be in the same league as the Red Sox and the Yankees, but believe me, it's true. The scary part is they're winning on both offense and defense, sporting one of the more fearsome starting lineups in all of baseball (ranked #4 in the AL with a team batting average of .286), as well has having the lowest team ERA (3.22) and opponent's batting average (.218) in all of baseball. I guess what I'm saying is, despite being all but ignored by the national media, one of baseball's best teams resides, believe it or not, in Detroit Michigan.

Just ask the Minnesota Twins, who had their asses handed to them this weekend in a Detroit-dominated sweep. The first game was a score of 9-0. The second, 18-1, and the third 6-0. That's a 33-1 drubbing of historic proportions:

In the sweep, Detroit outscored Minnesota 33-1 and outhit the Twins 47-15. The Tigers became the fifth team since 1951 and the first since 2002 to outscore an opponent by 32 or more runs in a three-game series. The Angels outscored the Indians 36-4 in a three-game sweep in May of 2002. All five games on this list were American League games.

Neither of which are the Yankees or the Red Sox.

I understand (I guess) the media's unhealthy obsession with the Yankees and the Red Sox, but while it's happening, why not pay even a little attention to the Tigers? Why isn't this a story worthy of national consideration?

Also, I can't believe the White Sox match us win-for-win and loss-for-loss every single game. I think we've had identical records over the past 17 games or something (total guess).

Yea, every morning I check and the damn WSox do the same as us! :screams: One thing though, if we keep playing like this, and come in second in the division, at this point in time, that would be good enough for the Wild Card. :hyper:

Also, I stopped watching ESPN years ago because I'm tired of the Yankee, Red Sox, first half an hour of the show being Basketball, and 2 mintues about hockey shit. :screams:

Yeah. It is exciting to see the tigers have been able to keep up with them so far. Both teams have been playing really well.

I'm glad that the Land of Cleve's could help ya'll out. I truly am impressed with how the Tigers are looking this year. I do feel good about the Tribe's chances, they have a bit more experience than the Tigers and I'm hoping that'll keep them consistant (while hoping the Tigers fall off a bit).

Anyways, I don't know why I allow myself to get sucked into the "Watch out, the Tigers are full of All-Stars and the best young players in the league, they're going to the playoffs this year" type posts at FFT when there are some decently level headed Tig's fans over here.

Cheers and good luck (not too much though), here's to the best division in all of batheball. Hmm, no  smilie.

You guys would have a better shot if you didn't have to deal with the Indians. After their blowout of the WSox yesterday, they're gonna run the table!@# :hyper: Seriously! I wonder what the record for most consecutive victories is, because the Indians upcoming 100+ wins straight will totally blow that out of the water!@#@ :hyper: :dopey:

That was another very nice win last night. Great pitching and defense with good enough hitting. They really seem to be getting hits when they need them. Something they couldn't do last year.

I think one of the most encouraging things this season is their relief pitching.
Rodney has yet to give up a run. Zumya has been great. Todd Jones has been good enough, hopefully he will start pitching a little better now that he has a few innings under his belt.

I didn't even know they were playing today!

Anyone know of a good live scoring site that I might be able to get to? I usually go to USAToday, but that kinda sucks.

And, before you say it, no I can't get to mlb.com.

For all their success, seems they suck in day games. I wonder what their record is this year in day games? I'd bet it's sub-500.

I can get to that, but it looks really bad. Since sportsline.com is blocked (but not cbs.sportsline.com), it looks really bastardized.

Oh well, USAToday's better than nothing.

Sucked they couldn't pull out that game last night. I was getting geared up for a Thames walk-off homer, but Rivera is flat-out un-hittable.

Hopefully Robertson can keep it up tonight. I'd like to split with the Yanks just to show that we belong with baseball's elite.

Just figured I'd jump in and say that I was way off when it comes to the Tigers in the beginning of the year when I flamed with a bunch of FFT mooks.

I was wrong because I thought that the Tigers were too young to keep it up, I figured they would show the inconsistancy that is normal for a young team. I thought that at best, they were still worse than the Yanks, Red Sox, White Sox and more than likely worse than the Indians, A's and Blue Jays. I figured they were along the lines of the Twins (which I was correct about) but I didn't correctly prodict the implosion of the Sox's and the Indians. I was wrong, dead wrong.

What I was right about though, was that 2 weeks into the season was nothing- exhibit a: Chris Shelton.
